The Portrait of a Lady tells the compelling and ultimately tragic tale of a beautiful young American woman’s encounter with European sophistication. Set principally in England and Italy, the story follows Isabel Archer’s fortunes as a variety of admirers vie for her hand. Her choice will be crucial, and she is not wanting for advice, whether from the generous- spirited Ralph Touchett or the charming but rootless Madame Merle.

Perhaps the most brilliantly successful ghost story ever written, The Turn of the Screw creates a terrifyingly believable impression of children so corrupted by evil that they remain deceptive pictures of innocent beauty. Their governess must struggle alone to confront and exorcise the demons which she believes possess their souls… Published in 1898, the story was immediately met with glowing reviews. It remains one of Henry James’s most popular works.

A young governess arrives at Bly, a country home in Essex, England, to care for Miles and Flora, two precocious and pure children. But as ghostly visions take shape, the obsessively protective governess soon fears for the safety of her wards—only to wonder if these hauntings are a conjuring of her own imagination. In challenging what we see—and what we believe we see—in the dark of the night, The Turn of the Screw stands as one of the boldest and most chilling ghost stories ever told.

Do you want to listen to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? If so then keep reading…Widely recognized as one of literature's most gripping ghost stories, this classic tale of moral degradation concerns the sinister transformation of two innocent children into flagrant liars and hypocrites. The story begins when a governess arrives at an English country estate to look after Miles, aged ten, and Flora, eight. At first, everything appears normal but then events gradually begin to weave a spell of psychological terror. One night a ghost appears before the governess. It is the dead lover of Miss Jessel, the former governess. Later, the ghost of Miss Jessel herself appears before the governess and the little girl. Moreover, both the governess and the housekeeper suspect that the two spirits have appeared to the boy in private. The children, however, adamantly refuse to acknowledge the presence of the two spirits, in spite of indications that there is some sort of evil communication going on between the children and the ghosts.Without resorting to clattering chains, demonic noises, and other melodramatic techniques, this elegantly told tale succeeds in creating an atmosphere of tingling suspense and unspoken horror matched by few other books in the genre. Known for his probing psychological novels dealing with the upper classes, James in this story tried his hand at the occult — and created a masterpiece of the supernatural that has frightened and delighted readers for nearly a century. What are you waiting for, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one click away, start listening NOW!

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James is considered among the best ghost stories ever written in English. It was published in serial form in Collier's Magazine in 1898, but written in 1897-1898 when James had moved to Rye in Sussex, a quaint and picturesque small English town. The story has been filmed and adapted many times, most lately in the 2020 Netflix series 'The Haunting of Bly Manor'. The story concerns a governess who is sent to look after two beautiful children at a remote house in the English countryside. What she experiences there is never fully explained: is she haunted or is she mad?Henry James was born in 1843 in New York but moved to live in London, where he died in 1916. James is an enormously influential figure in American literature. He wrote several very well-reviewed novels, for example, The Portrait of a Lady, but also The Bostonians, The Ambassadors and The Wings of a Dove. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912 and 1916.James turned his hand to ghost stories, which of course were all the rage at the end of the 19th Century. The Turn of the Screw is considered by some, even many, as the best ghost story ever written.

This early work by Henry James was originally published in 1908 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Henry James was born in New York City in 1843. One of thirteen children, James had an unorthodox early education, switching between schools, private tutors and private reading.. James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. In 1876, he emigrated to London, where he remained for the vast majority of the rest of his life, becoming a British citizen in 1915. From this point on, he was a hugely prolific author, eventually producing twenty novels and more than a hundred short stories and novellas, as well as literary criticism, plays and travelogues. Amongst James's most famous works are The Europeans (1878), Daisy Miller (1878), Washington Square (1880), The Bostonians (1886), and one of the most famous ghost stories of all time, The Turn of the Screw (1898). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

I don’t know what I don’t see—what I don’t fear!In this classic gothic horror ghost story, we follow a young governess and her deep psychological anguish. It begins when she agrees to care for two orphans living in a remote estate, and her sudden conviction that the grounds are haunted.Henry James used the horror genre to imbue the everyday with the uncanny and the unknown. A true measure of his success can be found in the debates still raging today: on topics of the characters' sanity, the concept of truth in fiction, and the extent to which James manipulates the reader.Written with such exquisite ambiguity, this book will call into question everything you know - but, in The Turn of the Screw, not knowing the truth might be a blessing. The Legend Classics series:Around the World in Eighty DaysThe Adventures of Huckleberry FinnThe Importance of Being EarnestAlice's Adventures in WonderlandThe MetamorphosisThe Railway ChildrenThe Hound of the BaskervillesFrankensteinWuthering HeightsThree Men in a BoatThe Time MachineLittle WomenAnne of Green GablesThe Jungle BookThe Yellow Wallpaper and Other StoriesDraculaA Study in ScarletLeaves of GrassThe Secret GardenThe War of the WorldsA Christmas CarolStrange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeHeart of DarknessThe Scarlet LetterThis Side of ParadiseOliver TwistThe Picture of Dorian GrayTreasure IslandThe Turn of the ScrewThe Adventures of Tom SawyerEmmaThe TrialA Selection of Short Stories by Edgar Allen PoeGrimm Fairy Tales
