"Halloa! Below there!" Unable to sleep one cold winter’s night, a gentleman wanders aimlessly around the countryside and comes across the dark mouth of a railway tunnel. There he spots an old signal-man, but when he calls out to him the old man is unresponsive. Managing to convince the signal-man that he means no harm, the old man invites him to his small, lonely shack. There, the gentleman learns a horrifying secret. But how well can he really trust the old Signal-Man? The Signal-Man is a masterful ghost story which has been adapted for TV and radio several times. ‘Little Dorrit’ is a highly personal novel by Charles Dickens that many critics state is one of his finest later works. The story revolves around Amy Dorrit, a kind-hearted young woman who resides in Marshalsea prison as her family cannot afford to pay their debts. Amy and her family’s fortune changes as Arthur Clennam, a wealthy businessman, takes an interest in her family while attempting to solve a mystery about his lineage. ‘Little Dorrit’ is a sprawling family saga that involves unrequited love, blackmail, and a timeless rags-to-riches story with a twist. Dickens’ celebrated social satire is displayed in this tale as he criticises the cruel prison system of Victorian England which his father spent many years in, unable to work or repay his debts. While this is a darker novel than Dickens’ early work, it still entertains through its cast of comical characters and lyrical prose. A thrilling novel that is equally poignant and entertaining, ‘Little Dorrit’ is still as relevant today as when it was written and is a must-read for fans of Dickens and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a widely popular English author and social critic. Among his most famous novels are ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘A Christmas Carol’, and ‘Great Expectations’. Dickens is best known for his depictions of poor Victorian living conditions and his unforgettable characters, some compassionate and others grotesquely malicious. Dickens’ timeless tales are still as celebrated today as when they were written, and his literary style is so influential that the term Dickensian was coined to describe the literature he inspired. Many of Dickens’ novels have been adapted for movies and television, including the Academy Award-winning musical ‘Oliver’.

Charles Dickens shared excessive interest in the machinations of the ghostly and the supernatural. Many of his ghost stories include a sense of justice or rational explanation in the end. "The Hanged Man’s Bride" is such a story that is rich in vivid descriptions of nature, murder mystery, and a restless spirit. Dickens does a great job in portraying the background in minutest of details, adding a layer of veracity and truthfulness to the supernatural occurrences. A chilling and recommended reading for the fans of ghost stories. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. There could only ever be three reasons as to why you find yourself reading this text. 1: You finished and liked part 1 and want to continue the story. 2: The hummus on your finger brought your here by accident or 3: You're one of those... special readers who, three chapters into part 1, just NEED to know how the story ends - right now! Regardless, you shan't be spoiled today. Pip, now 23, beset by ill fortune and spectres of the past, continues his quest to wrest the fair princess Estella from the evil sorceress Miss Havisham's clutches. Fortunately, Pip uses his first wish to have the Genie turn him into a prince to help his chances. If this sounds like a completely different story, it's basically not - especially if you add a cup of frock coats, a pinch of Victorian stiff upper lip and finally that 4th spice: Cumin of Age. Read it before you watch the Bruce Lee drama "An Orphan's Tragedy" or one of the eight other film adaptations. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Charles Dickens is renowned as one of the best writers of the Victorian era, and his after-dinner speeches were very much in demand during his lifetime. Dickens spoke on public occasions as a literature representative, and in sympathy with humanitarian movements. He even delivered a speech at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London on Wednesday, 27th June 1855. On one occasion, Dickens became critical of the administrative costs of running a charity and certainly didn't hold back in saying so. "I say openly, and plainly, that this fund is pompously and unnaturally administered at great expense, instead of being quietly administered at small expense." Can you imagine enjoying a meal in the 19th century and suddenly Charles Dickens stands up to deliver a speech? This collection of speeches from Charles Dickens allows readers to experience that moment for themselves. "We count by changes and events within us. Not by years." Set in a small village, which stands on the site of a historic skirmish, "The Battle of Life" follows the romantic trials and tribulations of two sisters, Grace and Marion. All the while, they are harangued by their father, Dr Jeddler, who seems to treat life as a joke. With love triangles, false elopements and noble sacrifices, this novella explores the idea that each person must face their own, personal battle and decide whether to resolve it with or without incurring casualties. Despite the themes, this love story is peppered with humour and optimism. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. 'Like a chaotic magic-lantern show, fascinated both by the spectacle it offers and by himself as spectator.' Pictures from Italy is a travelogue by Charles Dickens. In 1844 Charles Dickens took a break from writing novels and travelled through Italy. While there he visited the sites of Rome, Naples, Venice and Florence, however, it was the Italians themselves and their streets and lifestyle that caught Dickens' imagination. "There were two Popes at this time (as if one were not enough!), and their quarrels involved Europe in a great deal of trouble." If only history could always be this fun! Unlike Shakespeare’s history plays before him, Charles Dickens doesn’t fictionalize British history here as much as he just makes it incredibly readable and entertaining. A Child's History of England is written chronologically with no complicated analysis, but full of great stories and anecdotes. It reads like a novel but is fairly accurate, and any child as well as adult will come away from it with good knowledge of basic English history. "The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain" is one of Dickens’ Christmas-time novellas, written in the vein of his most popular one, "A Christmas Carol". Professor Redlaw is brooding over his past misery and mistakes, when he is suddenly visited by a ghostly apparition. The spectre comes with a bargain – the professor can be free from his past anguish, but there is a heavy price to be paid. What starts as a festive tale about the spirit of Christmas and joyous celebrations, turns into an exploration of the dark niches of the mind. A psychological warning to all people who are haunted by their past wrongdoings or memories, the novella is also a valuable lesson – it is better to forgive than forget. A five-star recommendation.
