America's most popular progressive radio host and New York Times bestselling author Thom Hartmann reveals how and why neoliberalism became so prevalent in the United States and why it's time for us to turn our backs to it.While America is at a crossroads regarding its economic future, many of us don't fully understand how we got here. In this powerful and accessible book, Thom Hartmann demystifies neoliberalism and explains how we can use this pivotal point in time to create a more positive future. This book traces the history of neoliberalism-which applies to a set of capitalistic philosophies favoring free trade, financial austerity, and deregulation-up to the present. Hartmann explains how neoliberalism was sold as a cure for wars and the Great Depression. He outlines the impact that it has had on America, looking at different sectors, including healthcare, unemployment, and education. Hartmann highlights how America can go one of two ways: continue going down the road to neoliberal oligarchy, as supported by the GOP, or choose to return to FDR's Keynesian economics, raise taxes on the rich, reverse free trade, and create a more pluralistic society.Foreword by Greg Palast Introduction: The Plot To Save The World 3Save us from the utopians 6The birth of Neoliberalism 9Neoliberalism's Fathers: Mises, Hayek and Friedman 13Ludwig von Mises and the “Critical Race Theory” of neoliberalism 13FA Hayek vs. the birth of Democratic Socialism 15Milton Friedman 19Neoliberalism Goes to Work 23Nationwide Neoliberalism Experiments 25Milton Friedman Hearts General Pinochet 26Neoliberalism comes to America 31Bill Clinton hearts the neoliberal revolution 35George W Bush Pushes Neoliberalism even farther 39Neoliberalism blows up in Bush's face 43Obama rescues neoliberalism from itself 46Trump attacks neoliberalism 46Biden challenges neoliberalism's core concepts 47How Neoliberalism Changed America in 40 years 48Taxes 48Trade 49Healthcare 50Education and Higher Education 51Finance 51Employment 52Homelessness 52Inflation 53Media and News 54The environment 55Privatizing the commons 55Destruction of democracy 60Breaking with 40 Years of Neoliberalism 61#TaxTheRich 62Rebuilding a middle class gutted by neoliberalism 62Trade: Returning to Alexander Hamilton's “American Plan” 66What is real wealth? 69Hamilton's 11 step plan worked for 188 years 70Tariffs built America 71But what about the cost of American-made goods? 71How China escaped neoliberalism 74America adopted neoliberalism and all I got was this made-in-China Tee Shirt 75Neoliberal trade policy rejected by South Korea 78Reverse privatization of core government functions 80Break up the monopolies 81Progressive Populism to replace progressive neoliberalism 82Standing on the edge 85NotesAcknowledgmentsIndexAbout the Author

Now available in paperback — The transformation of black college football from the golden age to integrationBlack college football began during the nadir of African American life after the Civil War. The first game occurred in 1892, a little less than four years before the Supreme Court ruled segregation legal in Plessy v. Ferguson. In spite of Jim Crow segregation, Black colleges produced some of the best football programs in the country. They mentored young men who became teachers, preachers, lawyers, and doctors — not to mention many other professions — and transformed Black communities. But when higher education was integrated, the programs faced existential challenges as predominately white institutions steadily set about recruiting their student athletes and hiring their coaches. Blood, Sweat, and Tears explores the legacy of Black college football, with Florida A&M’s Jake Gaither as its central character, one of the most successful coaches in its history. A paradoxical figure, Gaither led one of the most respected Black college football programs, yet many questioned his loyalties during the height of the civil rights movement.Among the first broad-based histories of Black college athletics, Derrick E. White’s sweeping story complicates the heroic narrative of integration and grapples with the complexities and contradictions of one of the most important sources of Black pride in the twentieth century.

MAGNIFICENT COUNTRY ESTATES The Duchy of Cornwall Estate – Established 1337 The summary of this audiobook is as follows: The Duchy of Cornwall, established in 1337 by King Edward III, is England’s oldest duchy, created to provide financial independence for the heir to the throne. Originally comprising lands in Cornwall and beyond, it has evolved from a medieval feudal estate into a modern, sustainable enterprise under Prince William, the 25th Duke. Historical Foundations The Duchy was founded through a royal charter granting Edward, the Black Prince, extensive lands and administrative rights. Over centuries, it survived political turmoil, including the English Civil War, adapting to economic and social changes while maintaining its core purpose. Evolution & Leadership Key figures like Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s consort) and Prince Charles (Duke from 1952–2022) modernized the estate. Charles championed organic farming, sustainable architecture (Poundbury), and environmental stewardship. Today, Prince William focuses on social impact, mental health support for farmers, and homelessness initiatives.Modern Estate & Operations The Duchy spans 135,000 acres across 20 counties, including: Dartmoor’s uplands (50% of holdings) Poundbury & Nansledan (sustainable urban developments) The Isles of Scilly (conservation and tourism) Revenue (£23.6M in 2023-24) funds royal duties, community projects, and environmental programs. The Duchy operates as a private estate with crown exemptions but voluntarily pays income tax. Sustainability & Social Impact The Duchy leads in: Regenerative agriculture (Focus Farms initiative) Net-zero goals by 2032 (renewable energy, carbon sequestration) Affordable housing and mental health support for rural communities Future Vision By its 700th anniversary (2037), the Duchy aims to balance tradition with innovation, serving as a model for sustainable land management and community development while supporting the monarchy’s future.
